Self-Absorbed People

I am currently reading a book on how to raise giving children in a self-absorbed world.

"Teach them how to look through a window and not a mirror."

My question to all of you is:

What type of child are you raising?

Share some tips with all of us for promoting compassion and responsibility in your child.

Are These Kids All Yours? said...

We homeschool- limit all exposure to what the world considers important- but we talk about these issues often with them. We try to be thrifty as much as possible for the purpose of being able to give away more. We have a large family- not a lot of excess when you have that. We sponsor a child, and openly give to other ministries. We do things for homeschool that include looking at the world - talking about it....thinking about what it is like for MOST people in the world not like us. We have chores- daily from age 3 on up. We have partners for some things, but we make it clear this is part of being in a family is to do things for others, and share the responsibility. They do get an allowance at age 5, but it is always tithed on. We talk about why, and they do it. They see the money. I love that my children are compassionate, and willing to give, and help out! I think it is in scripture everywhere....teach your children from scriptures- they will see it. NOT THAT BY ANY MEANS.......our children are perfect- HA- but they are compassionate and helpful.
